As a teacher, my first experience of teaching at school was both exciting and nerve-wracking. I vividly remember the mix of emotions I felt on my first day in front of a class of students. It was a positive experience overall, as I had prepared extensively and was eager to make a positive impact on my students’ learning journey.
The main difference between teaching as a student teacher and teaching as an employed teacher was the level of responsibility and independence. As a student teacher, I had the support and guidance of my mentor teacher, and I was able to observe and learn from experienced educators. I had the opportunity to gradually take on more teaching responsibilities under their supervision.
Once employed as a teacher, I became solely responsible for planning and delivering lessons, managing the classroom, and assessing student progress. This shift in responsibility brought about a greater sense of accountability and autonomy. I had to make decisions independently, address various classroom challenges, and adapt my teaching methods to meet the needs of my students.
Additionally, as an employed teacher, I had a long-term commitment to my students and their academic growth. Building strong relationships with my students and colleagues became essential for creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
While being an employed teacher presented greater challenges and responsibilities, it also brought a deeper sense of fulfillment and pride in seeing my students’ progress over time. As an employed teacher, I had the opportunity to develop my teaching style and refine my instructional techniques, which contributed to my professional growth and confidence in the classroom.
Overall, both experiences of teaching, as a student teacher and as an employed teacher, were invaluable in shaping my career as an educator. They provided a foundation for continuous learning, adaptability, and the dedication required to make a meaningful impact on the lives of my students.
